Director-Actor Manivannan passes away of Cardiac Arrest
Popular Tamil actor-director Manivannan passed away at his residence in Chennai on Saturday following a cardiac arrest, family sources said. He was 59. He is survived by his wife, a son and a daughter.
Prior to making his mark as an actor, Manivannan was also a highly successful director in the 1980s until the mid-1990s, straddling different genres in Tamil cinema. He started his career as an assistant to veteran director Bharathiraja, writing the story and dialogues for landmark Tamil films as “Nizhalgal” and “Alaigal Oiyvathillai”. Some of this known films are “Gopurangal Saivadhillai”, “Nooravathu Naal” and “Amaidhi Padai.” Other noted films directed by Manivannan include “Pudhu Manithan”, “Chinna Thambi Periya Thambi” and “Jalli Kattu”. He started his showbiz career as a writer. He penned dialogues for projects like “Tick Tick Tick” and “Kathal Ovium”.
With over 400 films as an actor and nearly 50 films as director, Manivannan was one of the most experienced personalities in Kollywood. He had also ventured into Telugu, Malayalam and Hindi film industries as well with a few movies.
His last film as a director was the Sathyaraj starrer “Nagaraja Cholan MA, MLA” which was released in May 10, 2013. The film is a sequel to the superhit “Amaithi Padai.”
