JFW Divas of South

The 5th Anniversary celebration of jFW, South India’s leading women’s magazine came to a grand finale with Divas of South, a unique award show in honour of the leading ladies of South Indian cinema from different generations. The show exceeded the expectations with a spectacular line up of performances by some of the popular names in the industry like Anjali, Amala Paul, Shriya Saran, STR (Simbu), Divya Spandana, Sneha, Parvathy Omanakuttan, Andrea and the like.

Celebrating 5 years of success, Divas of South was held at Chennai Trade Centre where actors Madhavan and Arya played host to an entire evening of nostalgia and entertainment. The duo kept the audience engaged throughout with their wit and admirable onstage camaraderie. The show began with a stellar performance by actress Neetu Chandra who danced for a foot tapping medley from the 50’s and 60’s. Actor Anjali of the Angaadi Theru fame kept the audience entertained with a nostalgic 80’s dance performance.

Representing the golden era of cinema, yester year heroine Manjula Vijayakumar was bestowed with an award by actor/husband Vijayakumar and actor Parthiban. The reigning queens of the 80s including Suhasini Maniratnam, Nadia, Revathy, Bhanupriya and Radha were present at the event and took the audience back on an evocative ride back to the 80s. Iyakunar Sigaram K Balachander presented an award to Revathy and spoke of his memorable experience with her in the film Punnagai Mannan, appreciating her acting talent.

Director Selvaraghavan awarded Suhasini Maniratnam and confessed that it is because of actors like her that Indian cinema has come such a long way. Actor Karthika a proud daughter mentioned that her mother was not just a diva when it came to cinema but also an all rounder when it comes to managing her family and business. Amala Paul did a fantastic dance medley in honour of actor Sridevi reminding the audience of a bygone era. Simran received an award from Director Vasanth, where he recounted his very first test shoot with the actress back in the day before she got picked for the role in Nerakku Ner. Leading ladies of the present day generation like Nayantara, Sneha, Shriya Saran, Hansika Motwani, Anjali and Amala Paul were also given awards in honour of their contribution to South Indian cinema.
Celebrating a 100 glorious years of Indian Cinema and felicitating the finest of actresses, jFW Divas of South saw the best of the South Indian film fraternity. A prestigious night, the show came to a grand finale with a livewire performance by actor Silambarasan. The award show will be broadcast on Jaya TV, one of South India’s foremost television channels on the 23rd and 24th of October, 2012.
