Legendary playback singer Paadum Nila S.P. Balasubrahmanyam passed away at a private hospital in Chennai on Friday. He was 74.
Balasubrahmanyam was first admitted to hospital in August 5, when he tested positive for Covid-19. He tested negative early in September, but continued to receive life support treatment.
Paadum Nila S.P. Balasubrahmanyam has sung over 40,000 songs in as many as 16 languages including Telugu, Tamil, Malayalam, Kannada, and Hindi. S.P. Balasubrahmanyam made his singing debut in 1966 with Telugu movie Sri Sri Sri Maryada Ramanna. He worked in the Bollywood Hindi-language mainstream and across India’s thriving regional cinema scene, and would go on to sing in all the major languages including Tamil, Kannada, Hindi, English and Malayalam.
Governor Banwarilal Purohit, Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami, Deputy Chief Minister O Panneerselvam and leaders of political parties have condoled the demise of veteran playback singer SP Balasubrahmanyam.
Tributes have been pouring in on social media from celebrities and fans alike.
S.P. Balasubrahmanyam is survived by his wife, Savitri; daughter Pallavi and son Charan.
