With a view to popularising their new designs, the Tamil Nadu Department of Handloom and Textiles will organise a one week exhibition-cum-sale at the Lalit Kala Academy from May 9 to 14, a top official said today.
M R rpt M R Mohan, Commissioner for Handloom and Textiles, told reporters here that a design intervention project, in association with the National Institute of Design (NID) was recently launched for the weavers in six different clusters of the state.
“According to the project, the clusters which had so far confined themselves to one particular product will also concentrate on others. For instance, Gudiyatham, a lungi cluster, is now producing shirts too,” he said.
Other beneficiaries include weavers in Cuddalore, Tiruchirapalli, Thirubuvanam, Vilandai and Kurinjipadi.
The NID had developed 1500 new designs, which were given to the weavers who have come up with latest designs, which will be on display at the exhibition, he said.
The Department was also in the process of popularising Handloom Mark, a mark of authentication,”to weed out spurious material,” Mohan added.
