• Centre to cater for elementary school children
  • Over a 100 resource centres planned by 2008

CHENNAI: The Government Model School, Saidapet, now has a Montessori-style learning resource centre, thanks to a joint project by Young Indians, a Confederation of Indian Industry initiative, and Round Table India, a non-governmental organisation, on Friday.

The two organisations also signed an agreement to promote further such initiatives in education in the country.

The Akshara Learning Resource Centre primarily caters for elementary school children and aims to facilitate easy learning of Mathematics, Science and English subjects with the Rs.2 lakh teaching aids donated by Young Indians.

Young Indians is promoted by the CII to bring youth from various walks of life under one platform to focus on issues of national importance. “The resource materials have been prepared by NGOs and are grouped according to age and subject, which makes it easy for the teacher to incorporate them into the existing curriculum. Training is also offered to teachers in subjects such as developmental learning of children,” Gayathri Sriram, Young India National Education Committee chair, said.

This is the eleventh resource centre opened by the forum in the country and the number would be increased to 20 by April. Over a 100 centres were planned by 2008, Ms. Sriram added.

The Saidapet School has been adopted as a model for the organisation’s Freedom for Education project, Giridhara Raj, chairman, Area 2, Round Table India, said. A golden jubilee block would also be built by the organisation as part of its jubilee celebrations.

Round Table India has, so far, built 4,500 classrooms in 1,000 schools across the country and was seeking partnerships for educational causes, RTI president Shivkumar Eshwaran said.
