Asserting that there was no political motive in the Income Tax raids at the residence of actor-turned-politician Vijaykant, Union Minister of state for Finance S S Palinimanikkam today said the raids were conducted on the basis of valid information that the actor and his relatives were evading filing of returns.

Palanimanikkam told reporters here that there was also a huge difference in the details of wealth submitted by the actor to the Election Commission, when he contested the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, which triggered the raids.

Income tax department would go ahead with raids on any other political leader, if needed, and if it received valid information, he said.

The DMDK floated by Vijaykant said the raids were “politically motivated and to silence the opposition to the DMK.”

Palanimanikkam said the raids were not confined to Vijaykant’s house, and pointed out that houses of two educationists- Jeppiar and Kanakaraj– were also searched by the department officials.

He said IT officials had seized documents and evidence to the tune of Rs 11 crore from Jeppiar, which were unaccounted. (Our Correspondent)
