CHENNAI: Actor R. Sarath Kumar has quit the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) in view of his “professional workload.”
In a statement here on Monday, Mr. Sarath Kumar said he had tendered his resignation to party general secretary Jayalalithaa since his role as president of the South Indian Artists Association needed an “undivided attention.”
“Due to certain unwanted developments, I have been forced to take a hard but painful decision regarding my political career,” he said, adding that his decisions regarding film or political career were always guided by his conscience.
He undertook a “whirlwind tour of the Assembly constituencies and vigorously campaigned for candidates of the AIADMK and its alliance partners” during the Assembly elections, he recalled.
“I will continue to concentrate on my profession to achieve greater heights and work for the welfare of not only my industry but for the welfare of the people of Tamil Nadu and society in general,” Mr. Sarath Kumar said.
His wife and actor Radhika was expelled from the AIADMK on October 18 for “anti-party activities.”
