To address the effluents discharge issue in Tiruppur, Tamil Nadu government is ready for implementing a Rs.700 crore scheme to lay pipelines to take the effluents into the sea, after talks with the owners of dyeing factories, Chief Minister M Karunanidhi said today.

On concerns voiced by legislators in the state assembly on the issue,he said the project would cost Rs.700 crore and the state was prepared to share 15 per cent of the cost and the Centre 25 per cent. The rest should be borne by the dyeing units, he said.

As the issue of effluent discharge is pending with the High Court, the state would ensure that the project was in place without any prejudice to court proceedings, he said.

He asserted that cultivable land would not be acquired for setting up industries in the state.

But at the same time, the farmers should adopt a give and take policy and should be prepared to part with a small portion of their land, if needed, for setting up factories, which was needed for a prosperous economy, he said. (Agencies)
