A women’s college in Chennai has been organising a carnival that gives a taste of entrepreneurship, motivating young girls to turn job providers than being just job seekers.

The college provides the funds but the students have to come up with viable business plans.

The idea is to make them enterprising and help them dream big. Once college is over, not only will they themselves be employed but they can also provide employment to others.

“The end result of this programme is that students start aspiring to become entrepreneurs and are enabled to scan the environment better,” said Rosy Fernando, Dean, MOP Vaishnov College.

Huge benefit

While textbook concepts are put to the ultimate test, the profits have been enormous.

Having identified their potential and the unlimited opportunity, many now look at entrepreneurship as a promising career option.

“The experience was great. We learnt how difficult it is to market a product,” said a student.

In future it will not be a wonder if I start a retail outlet for accessories, added a participant.

“We learnt a lot on how to deal with customers, how to negotiate and how to maintain finance,” said another student.

It’s an exercise that clearly opens up young minds and certainly worth replicating on other campuses in India.
