Yahoo Messenger is finally shutting down on July 17 after 20 years
Yahoo Messenger, one of the first instant messaging apps to gain popularity, is shutting down on July 17.
The Verizon-owned internet company that acquired Yahoo’s web properties for $4.48 billion in a deal struck in February 2017. The company announced last week that it will end support for Yahoo Messenger after July 17, 2018.
Yahoo is not offering a replacement for Messenger at this time, but the site did say that it has launched an invite-only group messaging app called Yahoo Squirrel in beta. Interested users can request an invite at squirrel.yahoo.com.
The website also states that the termination of Yahoo Messenger will not affect its other services like Yahoo Mail, Yahoo Fantasy and more.
