Korea’s handset parts maker Mogem Co. is considering setting up a plant in India, in a move to create synergy with its biggest partner Motorola.

According to industry sources, the Incheon-based midsize company will begin a preliminary on-site inspection later this month in Chennai on the southeast coast of India. The company will likely decide on the feasibility of the plant construction based on evaluation results.

Motorola, which accounts for about 85 percent of Mogem’s revenues, currently operates a 100-million-dollar plant in Chennai. The mobile-phone maker plans to build an additional cluster consisting of parts suppliers near the plant.

Mogem’s plant will be optimized to manufacture window lenses and caller line identification for Motorola’s RAZR and KRZR mobile phones, industry sources said. A window lens is a thin, transparent film that protects the liquid crystal display of a mobile phone screen – one can see it on LG’s Chocolate or Motorola’s RAZR phones.

Mogem has manufacturing bases in Tianjin, Cangzhou in China, and Incheon. It has provided handset components to Motorola, Nokia, Sony Ericsson, BenQ-Siemens and Paris-based Sagem Communication.
