The National Highways Authority of India on Thursday began demolition of Shri Andal Azhagar Kalyana Mandapam, at Koyambedu, which was owned by the actor-turned politician, A. Vijayakant, to make way for a grade separator. The demolition of the marriage hall building began around 8 a.m. on Thursday with the NHAI authorities deploying dismantling, demolition and breaking machineries.

“There was no law and order issue arising out of the demolition process. But, there were a lot of onlookers to see the massive exercise,” said a senior NHAI official. From now on the process of shifting and dismantling of electricity cables and towers and other public utility services would be simultaneously taken up. “We hope to complete the project in about a year’s time.” The NHAI official said the compensation of Rs.8.55 crore awarded to Premalatha, wife of Vijayakant, was yet to be collected by her.  Source: TheHindu
