Interview with Jaivanth – Hero of Mathiya Chennai Movie

Tell us about yourself and your entry in cinema.

I hail from Puthukkottai, the land from where gems like Gemini Ganesan and P.U. Chinnappa came from. Right from my childhood I have been obsessed with cinema. I am a diehard fan of MGR and see him as my role model. When faced with a question “what do you want to become”, many of my friends said they wanted to become an engineer or doctor; but I always said I would become an actor one day.

How did you get a chance to act? Was it easy? Did you have any connection, any godfather?

It was anything but easy. I have heard quite a lot of struggle stories, but never thought it would be so hard. As far as connections or godfathers, I did not even have a friend to share my thoughts when I landed in Chennai. I struggled a lot, but never gave up my hope. I always did my homework and kept visiting several producers in the hope that someone will give me a break. Finally, I met Vivekanand and Veerasingam, the directors of Mathiya Chennai.

Tell us something about Mathiya Chennai.

The film narrates the struggle of an assistant director and his ascent as an important actor in the industry. I found the protagonist’s struggle story pretty much similar to my real-life experiences, thus I have given a very natural and commendable performance.

The film has all that it takes to be a hit, right from romance to spectacular stunts. I have done many of the stunts without seeking any body double, however risky they were; all those years spent in the gym helped and also master Logu’s gymnastic training, which I started only a few months ago.

Did you go to any acting school or prepare for the role in an acting workshop?

No. I did my regular homework, wherein I practice dialogue delivery and enunciation. Then I carried on with my regular gym activities to keep myself in good shape. Apart from that I never attended any acting school or workshop. In fact I did not need such specific preparation, as the struggle of the protagonist is so close to my own struggle in the film industry.

There is so much competition in the industry; every day there is a hero rising. How will you sustain?

It is not about sustaining, but outshining. I have the confidence that I can and am not afraid of hard work.

How do you want to be remembered?

I want to be remembered like how MGR is remembered by his fans. I know it is quite hard but I will try my best to achieve it. And I would like to develop a style, which would be a mix of MGR and Rajinikanth’s!
